Sore Throat Test and Treat Service at Bargoed Pharmacy

The NHS Wales Sore Throat Test and Treat service (part of the Common Ailments Scheme) enables a patient* who has a sore throat to be assessed by a pharmacist. This may involve the pharmacist taking a swab of your throat if appropriate. This is an NHS service and saves the need for a GP appointment.

*patient must be 6 or over.

Consultation:Visit our pharmacy or call to book an appointment and our pharmacist will discuss your symptoms and medical history.

Assessment: Our pharmacist will determine the cause of your sore throat using structured questions and a swab test if deemed necessary.

Medication: Following a consultation and assessment by the pharmacist, we can supply paracetamol and/or ibuprofen if required, or an antibiotic if a throat swab indicates infection. If you have a viral infection, which does not require antibiotics, the pharmacist will give you self-care advice.
